The next step is engaging in the process of counselling. Counselling is a process with a beginning (exploration) a middle (understanding) and an end (change) through which clients and counsellor work together towards change.
This usually involves regular appointments pre arranged by clients and counsellor which allows problem exploration understanding and change to happen. The number of sessions is negotiated and reviewed to keep the focus on the goals you have decided.
Sessions normally take place once a week. Regular appointments help give enough support to make sense of things while also giving the opportunity for clients to experiment with ideas and try new things between sessions.
The pace of sessions will be agreed so you have a balance of support from the counsellor and the chance to experiment with ideas and practice these in your world between sessions. Counselling works best when the clients and counsellor are working together for change.
Ultimately the aim of counselling is to work mutually toward a good ending. Ideally you want to engage in counselling so you can work through problems but probably want to affect change so you can ultimately end counselling.
Contacting a counsellor can be a step towards change but it may feel daunting, particularly if you don't know what to expect. Click here for more information about the counselling process.
