A counselling assessment is generally the first session. Assessment is a face to face hour-long session which works out collaboratively between counsellor and clients if counselling and you will match.
An assessment gives you the client the time and space to explain the problem as you see it and begin to establish goals or aims for any ongoing counselling. This session helps the counsellor begin to build a picture of if counselling could help you and if so, how to tailor counselling toward those ends.
It also gives you the chance to see if counselling is for you.
At an assessment session the counsellor may ask about problem and your expectations of counselling.
The counsellor will want to know about:
If the counsellor feels another agency or specialism would better suit your needs at assessment they will point you in that direction and the assessment will be a "one off" session.
Toward the end of the assessment you and the counsellor will decide whether to book any future sessions or contract a period of counselling.
It is not unusual to agree up to six further sessions to further unpack the issues to understand and work toward solutions, although every couple is different and contract/agreement of work will reflect this individual tailoring.
If we choose to continue we agree a number of sessions - a counselling agreement.
Contacting a counsellor can be a step towards change but it may feel daunting, particularly if you don't know what to expect. Click here for more information about the counselling process.
